The Smart Owner's Summer Survival Kit for Pets

Summer doesn't have to be a season of worry. With the right preparation — done once at the start of the season — you can keep your dog or cat safe, comfortable, and happy.

This is not a generic checklist. This is an action plan. Take one hour to complete these steps. Your pet will thank you every hot day that follows.

Phase 1: Home Preparation (30 minutes)

Water Stations

  • Set up one water bowl on every floor of your home.
  • Keep one bowl outdoors if your pet accesses a balcony or garden.
  • Freeze a second set of bowls overnight to rotate in during peak heat.
  • For cats, position bowls away from litter boxes and food.

Cooling Spots

  • Identify the coolest room in your home, usually north-facing and tile-floored.
  • Place a cooling mat or damp towel in that room.
  • Ensure fans are clean and positioned at floor level.
  • Close curtains on windows that receive afternoon sun.

Emergency Readiness

  • Save your vet's phone number and address in your phone.
  • Program an emergency vet clinic number for after-hours.
  • Assemble a small heatstroke kit.
  • Confirm your car's air conditioning works properly.

Phase 2: Grooming Preparation (Book in Advance)

Summer grooming is different from winter grooming. The goal is not a shave — it is cleanliness, deshedding, and hygiene.

For Dogs

  • Book a professional deshedding session before temperatures consistently exceed 35°C.
  • Request paw pad fur trimming.
  • Schedule a sanitary trim.
  • Ask for ear cleaning.

For Cats

  • Book a deshedding session to reduce heat trapping and hairballs.
  • Request mat removal if needed.
  • Schedule a sanitary trim, especially for long-haired breeds.
  • Ask for nail trim.

What to Avoid

  • Never request a full shave for double-coated dogs.
  • Never shave a cat unless a vet or professional advises it.
  • Avoid bathing too frequently; once every 3-4 weeks is sufficient.

Team FurNest advantage: We bring all summer grooming to your doorstep. Your pet never travels in heat. No car ride. No waiting room. No stress.

Phase 3: Daily Routine Reset

Walk Schedule (Dogs Only)

  • Before 7 AM: Main walk of the day, 20-40 minutes depending on breed.
  • 11 AM - 4 PM: No outdoor time except brief toilet breaks.
  • After 7 PM: Evening walk, 15-25 minutes.

Indoor Enrichment for Peak Heat Hours

  • Puzzle feeders and snuffle mats.
  • Short training sessions, such as 5 minutes of commands.
  • Tug-of-war or fetch in an air-conditioned hallway.
  • Frozen treats, such as blended fruit or yoghurt in ice cube trays.

Feeding Adjustments

  • Split daily food into 3 smaller meals instead of 2 larger ones.
  • Feed the largest meal during the coolest part of the day.
  • Add water to dry food: 1/4 cup water per cup of kibble.
  • Offer wet food during afternoon hours for hydration.

Phase 4: The Heatstroke Emergency Kit

Assemble this kit once and keep it accessible.

Contents:

  • 2 soft towels.
  • 1 spray bottle filled with cool, not cold, water.
  • Digital thermometer; normal pet temperature is 38°C - 39°C.
  • Veterinary clinic address and phone number, written down.
  • A small bowl for offering water.

What to do in an emergency:

  1. Move your pet to shade or air-conditioning.
  2. Spray or pour cool water on belly, paw pads, and ears.
  3. Offer small sips of water every 2-3 minutes.
  4. Do not use ice or ice-cold water.
  5. Transport to a vet immediately, even if your pet looks better.

Phase 5: Know Your Pet's Risk Level

High Risk (Extra Precautions Needed)

  • Brachycephalic breeds, such as Pug, Bulldog, Shih Tzu, and Persian cat.
  • Senior pets: over 8 years for dogs, over 10 for cats.
  • Overweight pets.
  • Thick-coated breeds, such as Husky, Chow Chow, and Maine Coon.
  • Puppies and kittens.
  • Pets with heart or respiratory conditions.

If your pet falls into any category above, reduce outdoor time by half, increase water stations, and consider air-conditioning during peak hours.

One Final Reminder

Summer heat is predictable. Heatstroke is preventable. The difference between a stressful season and a safe one is simply preparation — done once, at the start of summer.

At Team FurNest, we are here to help. We bring professional deshedding, paw care, hygiene trims, and full grooming to your doorstep. No travel. No heat exposure. Just calm, expert care for your pet.

Because a cool pet makes a happy home.
